Four generations of Chenoweths, c. late 1880s — Elijah Jr., Joseph Hill, and (likely) Joseph Hill's son and grandson

What the portrait shows

A formal four-generation Chenoweth family portrait, late 19th century. Four figures arranged in a roughly pyramidal composition: two bearded patriarchs at left and right of the frame; a standing mustached younger man behind them in the center; and a small child seated in front. The lighting is studio-flat; the framing is the close-cropped style of the 1880s through 1890s.

Cast — per Roberta Burnes (June 2026)

Roberta’s identifications:

• Left (older bearded man, white beard, dark suit) — Joseph Hill Chenoweth (1832–1910). Lillie Dale’s father. Civil War Union veteran. The face is consistent with the other Joseph Hill portraits in the archive.
• Right (older bearded man, dark eyes, dark suit) — Elijah Chenoweth, Jr. (1806–1898). Joseph Hill’s father, and a man who lived almost the entire nineteenth century in Pleasant Township, Franklin County, Ohio.
• Back center (standing, mustached, dark coat with patterned tie) — uncertain; Roberta notes she is uncertain about the middle pair. Most plausibly one of Joseph Hill’s sons — the third generation in the line.
• Front center (small child in a ruffled white blouse with bow) — uncertain; most plausibly a child of the standing man — the fourth generation in the line.

If the middle-pair identification holds, the portrait is a literal four-generation frame: Elijah Jr. → Joseph Hill → standing man → child. The Chenoweth family-album label tradition that Roberta inherited would likely place the middle pair if the original mount has a back-of-photo identification still legible.

Dating

Elijah Chenoweth, Jr. lived 1806–1898 — he is the constraint on the latest possible date for this portrait. Looking at the photograph, his beard is heavy white and his face has the depth of late life; the eighties are the plausible age. Combined with Joseph Hill’s apparent age (50s–60s) and the small-child generation, the frame most plausibly sits in the late 1880s through the early-to-mid 1890s — Elijah Jr. in his late seventies through early nineties, Joseph Hill in his fifties, the standing man in his twenties or thirties, the child in early childhood.

A tighter dating — and the identification of the middle pair — would depend on the Chenoweth-album back-of-photo notation, on Egge’s Chenoweth-site family-tree records for which of Joseph Hill’s sons had which children at what ages, and on Roberta’s deeper family memory of who in the line sat for formal four-generation studio portraits in this period.

Why it matters

Four-generation portraits are unusual surviving documents. They were typically only sat for in families where (a) the great-grandfather was still living, (b) the great-grandfather was well enough to travel to a studio, and (c) the family had the means and the inclination to record the four-generation line on a single piece of mounted card. The Chenoweths of Franklin County had all three conditions met in the years between Joseph Hill’s first grandchildren arriving and Elijah Jr.’s death in 1898 — a window of perhaps twelve to fifteen years.

The portrait is also, by way of Elijah Jr. on the right, the only photograph of Elijah Chenoweth, Jr. currently in the archive. Before this portrait the Elijah Jr. page had only structured records and his handwritten family register pages from Roberta’s keeping. The face now joins the name.
