Teenage Lijie — perhaps twelve or thirteen, in a red jumper dress over a white turtleneck, hair pulled back — stands beside her father Ling Zhou 周玲, who wears the People’s Police (人民警察) service uniform of the period: pale blue shirt, dark tie, shoulder boards with rank insignia, a red-bordered badge at the collar. The visible horizontal banding behind both figures is the unmistakable trace of an older CRT television image — the photograph was taken by pointing a camera at a TV screen showing home-video footage, the common pre-digital way of preserving stills from video tapes.

This is the first photograph of Ling Zhou in the archive, and one of the earliest photographs of Lijie surfaced so far — bridging the c. 1986–87 toddler photograph at her grandmothers’ table and the present-day portraits.
