Terrie home from Hawaii — April 1971

Terrie home from Hawaii — April 1971

Terrie back home at the end of the April 1971 Hawaii R&R, standing in a driveway beside a Volkswagen Beetle with the bare trees of early spring behind her. She is in the same floral dress she wears on the Waikiki balcony, and she is carrying her luggage and a “Tropical Gold” Hawaiian pineapple souvenir bag — the return leg of the trip the Vietnam letters had planned all spring.

The two photographs make a bookend: the balcony in Honolulu at the start of the week, and this one — suitcase in hand, pineapple bag from the islands — at the end of it. Charlie was still in Vietnam; he would follow her home for good that June, and they would marry in August. It is one of the few photographs in the archive of Terrie during the long wait of the tour, caught at its one bright interruption.
