Anna Ellison Way

also known as Anna Ellison; Ann Ellison

b. 1821-06-28, Coppull, Lancashire, England

Anna Ellison is Chuck’s maternal four-times-great-grandmother on the Way line. She is the second of the English-immigrant founders of the Way family branch in Noble County, Ohio — alongside her husband Edward Taylor Way of the Isle of Wight.

She was born 28 June 1821 at Coppull, Lancashire, England, in the cotton-mill belt south of Preston in the English Midlands. The parish church record at Coppull records her christening as 22 July 1821, three and a half weeks after her birth. She would have grown up in the Lancashire mill country of the 1820s and 1830s — the decade Engels would later document — before crossing the Atlantic to southeastern Ohio.

The 1845 Morgan County marriage

On 27 January 1845, at Morgan County, Ohio, age 23, Anna married Edward Taylor Way — the Isle of Wight-born farmer eight years her senior. The Morgan-Noble County area of southeastern Ohio was settled in this period by a cluster of English-immigrant farming families — the Way, Ellison, Matthews, and adjacent surnames recurring across the 1840s and 1850s county records. Her marriage to Edward T. Way is the Lancashire-and-Isle-of-Wight crossing that anchors the Way line in Ohio.

The Way children

Anna’s nine documented children with Edward Taylor Way are enumerated in the “Way family among early settlers in Noble County” newspaper clipping preserved in Chuck’s family papers: Elizabeth, David R., Mary A., Abagail, Edward E., Henry, Sarah E., Emily J. and William M. The eldest, Elizabeth, the clipping’s family-papers annotation records, “was married twice. Her first husband was Lindley Yarnall.” The middle son Edward E. Way (b. 14 May 1851) is the one Chuck descends from — through Victoria Anna Way → Homer Davis → Dorothy Wildermuth → Terrie Lee.

Page is a stub. Anna’s death date and her Lancashire family of origin are open research items — the Coppull, Lancashire parish records should settle the Ellison side of her ancestry.
