Maria Magdalina Weyrich

also known as Maria Magdalena Weyrich

b. 1807-12-27, recorded on the charts as 'Marth,' Rhineland-Pfalz — a place name that does not yet resolve to a known village
d. 1879-11-28, Marietta, Washington County, Ohio

Maria Magdalina Weyrich was born on 27 December 1807 and married Johann Peter Schlicher of Adenbach, in the Kusel district of the Rhineland-Palatinate, on 28 February 1827. Their son Theobald “David” Schlicher — born 21 February 1835, still in Germany — became the Schlicher patriarch of Marietta, Washington County, Ohio, and the father of Flora Schlicher Wildermuth.

She reaches this archive through exactly one source: Robert Earl Wildermuth’s printed ancestor charts — his database output, not a document, and unverified against any register. Everything below is from that sheet and should be read as provisional.

The birthplace that does not resolve

The chart gives her birthplace as “Marth” — and it survives a better look. Re-read at full resolution in September 2026, the sheet has the word twice, once as her birthplace and once as the place of the 1827 marriage, and this time with a region attached: Rhineland Pfalz. So it is not a smudge, and this archive’s suspicion that it might be its own misreading of a small photograph is answered: Robert Earl typed Marth, in the Palatinate, deliberately.

It still resolves to no village this archive can match. What remains open is narrower than before:

  • a truncation of a longer Palatine name on the printed sheet
  • a name Robert Earl had himself taken down imperfectly from a correspondent
  • a real small place whose modern spelling differs

The region at least puts the search in the right country and the right Land, near her husband’s Adenbach after all — and the Adenbach or Odenbach marriage register for February 1827 would name it outright.

Her parents

The chart carries one generation further back, to Theobald Weyrich and Magdalina Burgey — and it is presumably from her father that her son’s name, Theobald, descends. An unusual name to carry into an Ohio river town, and it came from her side of the family, not the Schlichers’.

Neither Theobald Weyrich nor Magdalina Burgey is given a page here. They are names on a chart with no dates and no places, and this archive would rather hold them in prose than build pages that say nothing.

She is Chuck’s maternal four-times-great-grandmother: Maria Magdalina → Theobald David Schlicher → Flora Schlicher Wildermuth → Earl Adam Wildermuth → Robert Earl Wildermuth → Terrie → Chuck.

She crossed

This page used to end by saying that whether she made the Atlantic crossing or died in the Palatinate before the family left was unrecorded, and that nothing placed her in America. The same sheet had the answer on it all along, in a line too small to read in the first photograph: d: November 28, 1879 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio.

So she emigrated, buried her husband at Marietta in March 1861, and lived on in that Ohio river town for eighteen more years — long enough to see her son Theobald’s children born, including Flora in 1870, who was nine when her grandmother died. She was seventy-one. Where she is buried is not recorded, and a Marietta stone or a Washington County probate death entry for November 1879 would be the first document of her existence.

Source: the fourteen printed ancestor charts from Robert Earl Wildermuth’s research papers, c. early 1990s — the “Ancestors of Theobald David Schlicher” sheet, re-read from a full-resolution photograph in September 2026, which supplied her exact birth date, the 1827 marriage, the “Rhineland Pfalz” region for Marth, and her 1879 Marietta death. No other record of her is held in this archive.
