Lingyin Temple, Hangzhou

The 4th-century Chan Buddhist temple complex in the western hills of Hangzhou where Lijie's parents — Ling Zhou and Xun Li — were photographed twice in front of the same gate, decades apart: once on their honeymoon just after their 18 September 1982 wedding in Qingdao, and again on a return visit on 29 May 2019. On that same 2019 visit Chuck and Lijie stood in the same pose at the same gate, completing a three-frame echo of one couple's honeymoon across the next generation.

Why this place matters

The Zhou side's first then-and-now place — analogous to the Wildermuth pilgrimages to the Württemberg villages. The 1982 honeymoon visit is the earliest surviving photograph in the family's keeping of Ling and Xun together as a married couple; the 2019 return frame is its 37-years-later match; and the 2019 Chuck-and-Lijie frame in the same pose is the generational echo. All three together turn the diptych into a triptych.

Then & now

The same gate, the same pose, across one wedding and the next generation.

Lingyin Temple (灵隐寺) — “Temple of the Soul’s Retreat” — is one of the oldest and largest Chan Buddhist monasteries in China, founded in AD 328 in the western hills of Hangzhou. It is among the most-visited Buddhist sites in the country and the architectural anchor of the West Lake / Feilai Feng cultural landscape.

For this archive, Lingyin matters as the three-frame echo above: the same temple gate, three photographs across 37 years. The first is the 1982 honeymoonLing Zhou and Xun Li, Lijie 周丽婕’s parents, just after their wedding in Qingdao. The second is their return to the same gate on 29 May 2019. The third, taken on the same 2019 visit, is Chuck and Lijie in the same pose — the daughter and her husband standing where her parents had stood, deliberately reframing the honeymoon pose one generation on.

It is the Zhou-side equivalent of the Wildermuth pilgrimages to the Rielingshausen church and the Marbach / Wildermuthstraße street sign, with the additional grace note that the third frame was made by the next generation themselves, on the same trip as the second.
