This is the only photograph of Charlie in uniform in Vietnam currently placed in this archive. It catches him in the off-duty register of his tour — not on patrol, not in the field, but at the club between deployments — and his 101st Airborne patch is the unit identification the eulogy and the Letters from Vietnam had previously left implicit. The 101st Airborne was operating in I Corps (Northern South Vietnam) through 1970 and 1971, with major bases at Phu Bai and Camp Eagle near Huế.

The image complements the Vietnam letter sequence — the letters carry his voice across the year; this frame carries his face. He is twenty-three or twenty-four years old.
