At the altar — Charlie and Terrie's wedding, 15 August 1971
The ceremony itself, 15 August 1971, inside the First Congregational Church in Marietta, Ohio — Charlie and Terrie standing together before the minister at the front of the sanctuary, the wedding party ranged to either side, the congregation filling the pews, white bows marking the aisle ends, an American flag at the left and tall arrangements of gladioli at the altar rail.
This is the photograph that holds the longest thread in the archive. The same sanctuary — the same altar — is where Chuck would, decades later, deliver the eulogy for his father. The room where the marriage began and the room where it was mourned are one and the same. Few images in this collection carry that kind of doubling: a single place photographed at the start of a life together, and returned to at its close.
