This is a documentary frame of the second small-town extended-family-care household of Chuck’s childhood — the Angel house on Washington Street where Chuck spent sick-and-injured days with his godmother across his childhood, with the picture-framing basement, the Marietta College Book Store Manager’s hospitality, and the Sunday-school-teacher warmth Faye’s 2011 obituary describes. This is the Angel house, the way Chuck remembers it — the kitchen Faye standing in.

The triangulation of family

The photograph holds three figures across two generations of Chuck’s life:

• Faye Angel — Chuck’s godmother, the mother-in-law of his great-uncle William Harvey Davis Sr. through Becky’s 1963 marriage, the Marietta College Book Store Manager who hosted his mother Terrie on her college courtship visits to Charlie, the Sunday-school teacher of twenty years at Christ United Methodist Church.
• Charlie Eesley — Chuck’s father, husband to Terrie, the man whose college courtship Faye had hosted his future wife through, decades earlier.
• Young Chuck — the godchild Faye had taken responsibility for at his baptism, the child of the courtship she had hosted, sitting in her kitchen as a small boy.

The single Kodachrome captures the godmother arc opened and continued: Faye hosted Charlie’s bride; the bride had Chuck; Faye hosted Chuck. Three generations of family closeness photographed at once.

The date

If young Chuck is school-age (visible in the background but small) the photograph plausibly dates to the 1990s. Faye would have been in her 70s or early 80s in the frame; her 2011 obituary frames her ninety-three years of activity through to nearly the end.
