Lijie at the gate of Dexian Road Elementary School (青岛市市南区德县路小学) on a return visit as an adult — black coat, red wool scarf, red glove raised in a wave. Behind the school’s accordion-style security gate, the schoolyard is alive with students in winter coats, an assembly hour or recess in progress. Rising above the school in the upper left of the frame: the unmistakable twin red-roofed towers of St Michael’s Catholic Cathedral (青岛圣弥额尔大教堂), the 1934 German-Catholic landmark of Qingdao’s old town.
Dexian Road sits in the Shinan district (市南区) of central Qingdao, a block south of the cathedral — the heart of the German concession quarter where Lijie grew up. Her primary school years were spent within the same compact old-town walking radius that holds the cathedral, the seafront, and the old town’s earliest streets. The photograph is the visual companion to her parents’ Qingdao addresses and her own walking-distance childhood geography.
The return visit, with the schoolyard active behind her and her own primary-school self somewhere in the building’s history, is the Lijie analog of Chuck’s Highland Ridge Road — the institutional anchor of childhood seen across the years.
