What the photograph shows

A sepia-toned head-and-shoulders school portrait of a smiling boy of about six. He wears a sailor-collar shirt with a small dark medallion or scarf at the throat — the typical children’s clothing of late-1920s and early-1930s American elementary schools. His light brown hair is parted at the side; his pale eyes are visible in the soft sepia tone; he is smiling broadly at the camera — the kind of open-faced smile a six-year-old who likes school gives.

The print is labeled at the top in the family’s hand: “CA 1930 / Robert Earl Wildermuth, I / (1924-1999) / 1st grade” — Robert Earl’s full lifespan (he died 25 June 1999 in Venice, Sarasota County, Florida) and his school grade at the time of the portrait.

In the memoir’s frame

Robert Earl’s 1989 memoir opens with the 413 Harmar Street childhood the family lived through his early-school years. He started Harmar Elementary School — six blocks from home, at the original Fort Harmar site at the junction of the Muskingum and Ohio rivers — at first grade in c. 1930. The school had two rooms per grade and ran first through sixth. His sister Ruth Irene was the only year ahead of him. He notes in the memoir that he was “well above average academically” and “loved science, mathematics and the languages and enjoyed a great competition in being better prepared for class than any of the others.”

This portrait catches him at the beginning of that academic life — six years old, in his first school year, the smile of a boy who would go on to Stanford (BA 1948), the Air Force career, the Pentagon, the Wildermuth/Fleming Heritage genealogy.

This is the third formal portrait of Robert Earl in this archive — and the earliest by some margin:

Together the four span forty years of his life, from the smiling six-year-old to the Pentagon Lt. Col. The shared element across all four: he is smiling steadily, slightly to the side, with the same pale-eyed open expression. The constancy of the face is its own family-archive feature.
