Young Chuck on a red BMX bike — Hillcrest, c. 1984–86

Chuck at roughly five or six, beaming, astride a red BMX-style bike with training wheels on the patterned rug of the Hillcrest living room — the family’s first house after the 1983 move back to Marietta from Annapolis. He wears a white-and-blue sweatshirt with yellow color bands and a ‘Meadows’ graphic across the chest, with matching blue track pants and white sneakers. Behind him: warm-tone wood-paneled walls, a turntable cabinet at left, a hexagonal Persian-style throw rug, and the kind of carpeted-rec-room interior that places the photograph squarely in the mid-1980s. A red brick fireplace and chrome accents catch the flash.

The bike

The frame is the classic mid-1980s 20-inch BMX cruiser — padded crossbar, knobby tires, a front handlebar pad with stylised lettering (“BAJA” or similar). Training wheels mark the post-tricycle, pre-two-wheeler stage of childhood cycling. The bike sits indoors here either because it’s new (a recent Christmas or birthday gift on display) or because the kid took it inside without quite checking with the parents first.

Where it sits in Chuck’s biography

The photograph — one of the early bikes of the Marietta years — pairs with the matching outdoor Highland-Ridge shot and feeds into the long arc that runs through Charlie’s death from diabetes into Chuck and Lijie’s annual charity bike rides. The training wheels are the earliest documented hardware in the corpus.
