Emma Maude Way

Emma Maude Way was the youngest of the Way sisters — born 3 July 1883 in Jackson Township, Noble County, Ohio, a daughter of Edward E. Way (1851–1924) and Tacy Elizabeth Matthews (1848–1902). She was a younger sister of Belsora “Belle” Way Wickens and of Victoria Anna Way Davis — Chuck’s maternal great-great-grandmother — which makes Emma a great-great-aunt of Chuck’s and an aunt of the toddler Homer Edward Davis in the family’s 1901 wedding portrait. She stands among her sisters in that photograph; the numbered key labels her, from the vantage of a later hand, “Emma Way Parker.”

Marriage and the move west

On 24 December 1912 she married Harry H. Parker. Sometime after, the couple went west to Wyoming — and there Emma died young. She died 9 November 1917 at Lost Springs, Converse County, Wyoming, at only thirty-four. Her body was brought back the length of the country to Ohio: she was buried in 1917 at Crooked Tree Cemetery, Noble County — the Way family ground, beside her parents and the sisters she had stood with at Belle’s wedding sixteen years before.
