Jane (Armstrong) Davis

Jane Armstrong is Chuck’s maternal three-times-great-grandmother and the source of the “Armstrong” in her son William Armstrong Davis’s name — the kind of maiden-name-as-middle-name that keeps a mother’s family visible a generation on.

She was born in 1816 in Jefferson County, Ohio, and married Joseph Davis there on 26 May 1842. She died 6 November 1881 in Washington County, Ohio, and was buried at Beverly Cemetery, Beverly — the same Muskingum-riverfront burying ground where her husband would be laid fifteen years later.

The Scottish thread

The GEDCOM records Jane’s mother as Jannet McCalmont, born 14 April 1784 in New Luce, Wigtownshire, Scotland (d. 1869) — a Scottish immigrant whose family crossed to the upper Ohio Valley. She is, so far, the deepest and one of the few non-German, non-English immigrant threads on Chuck’s maternal side, and a lead worth confirming against the Wildermuth & Bain book’s Davis section. Jane’s father is not yet recorded.
