PFC EESLEY — Charlie's Army induction portrait, c. 1969

The official Army portrait of Charlie Eesley as Private First Class — “PFC EESLEY” typed on the name plate at the bottom of the frame. Black-and-white head-and-shoulders studio shot, the standardised U.S. Army induction photograph form of the late 1960s.

This is the earliest documented military photograph of Charlie in this archive — predating the c. 1970 Vietnam EM club photo and the July 1970 hooch photograph by roughly a year. He looks clean-shaven, fair-haired, in olive utility uniform — the standard cleanup that followed basic training. Most likely taken at Fort Benning, Georgia or Fort Knox, Kentucky during the U.S. Army’s induction-portrait routine.

The contrast with the July 1970 Vietnam frame is documentary: a year before that photograph, this is Charlie at the beginning of a tour he had not yet begun.
