Clara Ullmann Hill with her daughters Emma and Louella — c. 1935

Clara Ullmann Hill with her daughters Emma and Louella — c. 1935

Three women outside a white clapboard house, c. 1935 — and, importantly, the first confirmed photograph of Clara Victoria Ullmann Hill (1885–1941) in this archive. Clara, Chuck’s maternal great-great-grandmother, stands at the center in a printed dress and glasses, flanked by two of her four children.

Dating — probably Louella’s graduation

The date rests on the daughters’ ages and one nice detail: Louella graduated Somerset High School in 1935, and her formal dress and corsage here read like a graduation occasion. That fits the rest — Emma at about twenty-eight, Louella at seventeen or eighteen, and Clara around fifty. It comfortably precedes Clara’s death in October 1941, and gives the archive a face for a great-great-grandmother who until now existed only in the record and in the Mt. Perry group alongside her husband and mother-in-law.
