Clara Victoria Ullmann

Clara Victoria Ullmann was the mother of Bessie Marie Hill Davis — Chuck’s maternal great-grandmother on the Davis side — and is therefore Chuck’s maternal great-great-grandmother on the Hill-Ullmann line.

She was born 8 July 1885 in Washington, Monroe County, Ohio, married Harvey Hendershot Hill at age 18 on 15 June 1904 in Monroe County, and gave birth to Bessie Marie Hill the following March (28 March 1905) — the eldest of their four children. The family lived in Monroe and Washington counties across the early twentieth century.

Clara died 15 October 1941, age 56 — nine years before her daughter Bessie’s own early death in 1950 and a decade before her widower Harvey’s death in 1951.

A Hill family gathering portrait c. 1939-1941 — preserved in Chuck’s keeping and discussed on the Harvey Hendershot Hill page — most plausibly carries Clara seated next to her husband Harvey, in what would be one of the last documented photographs of her before her October 1941 death.

Her granddaughter Dorothy Marie Davis (Bessie’s daughter, b. 24 February 1925) was sixteen when Clara died — old enough that the Ullmann name and any oral history of the Ullmann line was carried into Dorothy’s generation, even if it does not surface in Robert Earl’s 1989 memoir or 1990 Wildermuth/Fleming Heritage.

The Ullmann surname signals a likely German-immigrant line in southeastern Ohio — the same German Catholic-and-Lutheran migration into the Monroe-Washington county region in the mid-nineteenth century that brought the Wildermuth family from Heidenheim to Marietta. The specific Ullmann immigrant ancestor is open research.
