Ida Jeanetta 'Nettie' (Ullman) Hill

Ida Jeanetta “Nettie” (Ullman) Hill was the younger sister of Clara Victoria Ullmann — the wife of Harvey Hendershot Hill and mother of Bessie Marie (Hill) Davis. That makes Nettie Bessie’s maternal aunt, and Chuck’s great-great-grandaunt on the Ullman side.

She was born in June 1892 in Ohio, one of at least eight children of Frederick Ullmann (1854–1940) and Elisabeth (Bode) Ullmann (1854–1930) — the same parents as Clara (b. 1885), confirmed in the family GEDCOM (both children of family record @F40@).

The two Hills — a coincidence of surname

Nettie married Byron E. Hill (1887–1932) on 20 March 1912. Byron was not one of Harvey Hendershot Hill’s brothers: the GEDCOM places Byron in a separate Hill family, while Harvey was a son of Josiah W. Hill Sr. and Janetta (Smith) Hill. So although the two Ullmann sisters both became “Mrs. Hill,” they married into different Hill lines — a coincidence of surname, not a double-brother marriage. Byron died in 1932, and Nettie was a widow for the rest of her life.

In the photographs

The earliest is the c. 1920 family portrait — Nettie in her late twenties at left, her husband Byron at right, and three of their young children in front (a baby, and two boys whose names the archive has not yet recovered). It is the first image of Nettie in the archive and the only known likeness of Byron.

Nettie is also the older woman seated at right in the 1947 five-generation Hill–Davis–Murdock portrait, beside her grandniece Mary Louise (Davis) Murdock and the infant Jack. She died 27 July 1977 in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
