Hill–Davis–Murdock family portrait — 1947 (the 'five generation' picture)
A summer 1947 outdoor group portrait on a park bench, printed by the family with a full caption naming everyone — the maternal Hill–Davis line across its living generations.
Who is in the frame
Per the printed caption:
- Standing: Bessie Marie (Hill) Davis (1905–1950) and her father Harvey Hendershot Hill (1882–1951).
- Seated: Mary Louise (Davis) Murdock (1924–2002), holding her infant son John “Jack” Anthony Murdock, Jr. (1946–1977), beside Ida J. “Nettie” (Ullman) Hill (1892–1977).

The generations — and the caption
The print is labeled a “five generation picture.” The direct line of descent it captures is in fact four generations: Harvey Hill → his daughter Bessie → her daughter Mary Louise → her son, the infant Jack. The fifth figure, Nettie, is not a fifth generation but Bessie’s aunt — the younger sister of Bessie’s late mother Clara Ullmann Hill, who had died in 1941. Nettie stands in, in a sense, for the missing matriarch: Clara’s generation, present at the gathering through her sister.
It is a poignant frame for another reason. Of the five, three would be gone within a few years or had hard endings ahead: Bessie died in 1950, at 45; Harvey in 1951; and the baby, Jack, died in 1977, at about 31. In 1947, though, they are five people across four generations on a bench in the Ohio summer.
