Eight men of Robert Earl Wildermuth’s B-24 crew at a Pacific theater tent camp, c. 1944–1945. Identified by Chuck Eesley in 2026 as featuring his grandfather Robert Earl Wildermuth.

The composition: five men standing in the back row, three men crouched in the front, all in various combinations of fatigue pants, undershirts, and bare-chested casual dress — the standard heat-management uniform of American servicemen at South Pacific tropical bases. Behind them three pyramidal tents and a forest of palm-shaded trees; underfoot the white coral-sand or chalk-soil characteristic of the island airfields the 90th Bomb Group (Robert Earl’s “Jolly Rogers”) operated from across late WWII.

The frame is one of the documentary images of the crew that flew the B-24 navigation missions Robert Earl’s combat log The Big One describes — the same crew that would have included the radio operator, the bombardier, the pilots, the engineers, and Robert Earl himself as navigator. Which of the eight figures is Robert Earl is open, pending Chuck’s closer identification or a comparison against the July 1944 portrait of him in uniform.

Why this matters

The 90th Bomb Group’s wartime photography from the Pacific theater is among the documented records of the American B-24 campaign against Japan; this photograph is the family’s own version. Where the official unit photographs were stiff and posed, this is the off-duty version: eight young men in the heat, the tents behind them, the war for the moment a few feet of distance away.
