The Big One: World War II
Robert Earl Wildermuth's dated mission-by-mission record as navigator on a B-24 with the 400th Squadron ("Black Pirates") of the 90th Bomb Group ("Jolly Rogers"), flown out of Biak, Leyte, and Mindoro — followed by a roster of his ten-man crew, each with a portrait.
The full original document is available here: Read “The Big One” (PDF).
This document contains two interleaved threads: the mission log (dates, targets, weather, anti-aircraft, losses) and a crew roster of the ten men on the B-24 with Robert Earl. The mission log covers November 1944 through May 1945, operating from forward airfields in the western Pacific — Biak, Leyte, and Mindoro. The crew portraits and short bios that follow the missions include navigator Robert Earl himself, the MIT-educated pilot Van Valen, the radio operator “Fuzzy” Kuszmaul, the Texan tail gunner and crew photographer Jesse Murdock, and the other men of the ten-man crew.
A markdown transcription with the crew promoted to individual people entries is queued for the next pass.
