Two young men stand close together in the foreground — the man on the left shirtless, in fatigue pants, with what appears to be a Browning Automatic pistol holster on his hip and a knife sheath; the man on the right in light short-sleeved uniform shirt and pants, smiling broadly into the camera. Behind them: palm trees, pyramidal tents, the rough scrub-and-sand ground of a South Pacific island base. The shadows are sharp and the light is the high overhead light of a tropical afternoon.

Which of the two men is Robert Earl is open, pending Chuck’s closer identification or comparison against the July 1944 Marietta uniform portrait of him.

The frame is the off-duty register of Robert Earl’s documented Pacific service — the WWII combat log The Big One and the memoir describe the missions; this and its companion eight-men-tent-camp frame give the visual texture of the days between them. The two together place Robert Earl in the documentary record of the 90th Bomb Group “Jolly Rogers” Pacific campaign as a young man in his twenties, in the heat, at the camp.
