Theodore Ewing 'Ted' Angel

also known as Ted Angel; Theodore E. Angel; the Marietta picture-framer; father of Rebecca 'Becky' Lynne (Angel) Davis

Theodore Ewing “Ted” Angel was the husband of Fay Elsie Heter Angel, Chuck Eesley’s godmother — in a 53-year marriage that began when the two of them moved to Marietta together in 1939. Together they ran Angel’s Mat and Frame Shop out of their Marietta home for twelve years — the basement filled with thousands of picture frames, stacked and sorted and waiting for the customer orders that came in over decades.

A small-town family business at this scale — not a chain, not a factory, but the kind of skilled-trades home-business that operated out of a basement and a workshop — was a staple of Marietta-area economic life from the 1960s through the 2000s. The Angels’ frame business sat in that pattern. Ted was the maker side, Faye was the host-and-keeper side; the basement of the house was the workshop.

The Angel home was one of the two sick-day caregiver households for young Chuck Eesley — alongside the Wolfes at 108 Hillcrest Drive. When Chuck couldn’t go to school, he was often at Ted and Faye’s house, and the picture-framing operation went on around him.

The Davis-family connection

Ted and Fay’s daughter Rebecca “Becky” Lynne (Angel) Davis married William Harvey Davis Sr. — Chuck’s great-uncle, the youngest brother of Chuck’s grandmother Dorothy — on 16 August 1963 in Washington Township, Monroe County, Ohio. That marriage made Ted and Fay the parents-in-law of Chuck’s maternal great-uncle. The c. 1992 Davis-Angel family portrait is the documentary record of that connection, with Ted and Fay, Becky and Bill Sr., and their adult children all together. The portrait is also likely one of Ted’s last photographs — per Fay’s 2011 obituary, the marriage ran 53 years and Ted predeceased her, placing his death c. 1991–1992.

Ted and Fay’s other child

The 2011 obituary also names a second child: David L. Angel of North Lake Tahoe, California — Ted and Fay’s son, Becky’s brother. Ted was preceded in death (per Fay’s obituary) by his grandson Dr. David Angel Jr. M.D., presumably David L.’s son, who died as a young physician.
