Davis-Angel family group portrait, c. 1992, with full cast labels at top and bottom identifying nine figures. The critical revelation: Faye and Ted Angel’s daughter Becky married into the Davis family — specifically William Harvey Davis Sr. (Betty and Dorothy Davis’s youngest brother, b. 1941) on 16 August 1963 in Washington Township, Monroe County, Ohio. The two families are genealogically connected through that marriage; the back row of this portrait is essentially Becky’s children-and-husband, the front row her parents-sister-in-law-and-self. The photograph documents the bridge.

• Homer Edward Davis — presumed second son of Bill Sr. and Becky, named for his grandfather Homer Edward Davis Sr. (1900–1982). (The 1900–1982 Homer was already deceased by the photograph’s 1992 date; this is the younger Homer.)
• William Harvey Davis Sr. — Betty and Dorothy’s youngest brother (b. 20 August 1941, much younger than his sisters — Dorothy was 16, Betty 15 when Bill was born). Married Becky Angel in 1963, two years his junior. The youngest of the four Davis siblings, and the patriarch of the Davis-Angel branch the rest of this photograph documents. He would live another thirty years after this portrait, dying in West Virginia in April 2022, age 80.

What the photograph reveals about Faye Angel’s family role

Until this photograph surfaced in the archive, the working hypothesis for why Faye Angel was Chuck’s godmother was simply “close family friend.” The labeled cast settles the question much more concretely:

Faye’s daughter Becky married William Harvey Davis Sr. — Chuck’s great-uncle, the youngest brother of Chuck’s grandmother Dorothy. Through Becky’s marriage, the Angel family became in-laws of the Davis family, and the Angel-and-Wildermuth family closeness was not just neighborly friendship but kinship-through-marriage. Faye was Chuck’s grandmother’s sister-in-law’s mother — the kind of in-law-of-an-in-law closeness that small-town family networks readily turn into godmother bonds. Faye becoming Chuck’s godmother in 1979 was a natural in-the-family godmother choice.

Chuck’s grandmother Dorothy Davis → her youngest brother William Harvey Davis Sr. → Bill Sr.’s wife Becky Angel → Becky’s mother Faye Angel → Chuck’s godmother.

Why the Angel-and-Davis household network mattered to Chuck’s childhood

Chuck’s two sick-day caregiver households in childhood — Faye Angel’s house with the picture-framing basement, and Aunt Betty Wolfe’s house at 108 Hillcrest Drive — are now visible as two ends of the same extended family network, joined through the Becky-and-William-Jr. marriage. Aunt Betty was Chuck’s great-aunt by blood; Faye was Chuck’s family by Becky’s marriage into the same Davis line. The picture-framing business and the holiday dinners ran in the same family-network orbit.
