Three Eesley brothers c. 1912 — Don, Will, and Len

What the portrait shows

A sepia outdoor portrait of three young Eesley brothers, c. 1912, standing in a row on a patch of grass. The composition is plain — head-and-shoulders crops loosened a little, no studio backdrop, the kind of outdoor frame a parent or relative would take at home with a hand-held camera in the early years of family photography.

Per Chuck (June 2026), the three brothers are Don, Will, and Len — three of the eight children of Charles Leonard Eesley and Lillie Dale Chenoweth Eesley.

Cast — matched by age

The brothers’ birth years and their visible ages in the frame:

• Left — Donald Stuart “Don” Eesley (b. 1908). About four years old in this frame — the child with the bowl-cut blond hair, wide sailor-style collar, and knee-length shorts.
• Middle — Wilbur “Will” Eesley (b. 1910). About two years old — the broadly-smiling toddler in the long white smock-dress (the period convention for very young boys before breeching). The same Will whose 1922 broken leg from falling off a roof at age 15 his mother Lillie Dale would later write to her oldest son Len about; the same Will who would later design and build the Highland Ridge Road house in Lowell, Ohio where Chuck would grow up.
• Right — Leonard David “Len” Eesley (b. 1904). About eight years old — the oldest boy, in the button-front tunic with crossed straps, looking calmly at the camera. The same Len who, a decade after this photograph, would drive solo across the country to California in the summer of 1922, prompting Lillie Dale’s letter home.

The dating — Len at 8, Don at 4, Will at 2 — lands the photograph at circa 1912, roughly five to six years after Charles Leonard and Lillie Dale had begun raising their large family. At the time of this photograph the household had at least these three sons, plus possibly the older Thomas (b. 1906) and Dale (b. 1906) who are not in the frame; Mary, Jean, Lyle, and Helen were yet to be born.

Why it matters

The portrait is the earliest photograph of Will Eesley in the archive — Chuck’s paternal grandfather as a toddler, before the broken leg, the architectural career, the Hong-Kong-inspired Highland Ridge house, or any of the rest of the life that would unfold from there. “That you do not now contain the seeds of every life you will ever live” — the frame catches him at the start.

It is also a small piece of the Lillie Dale Chenoweth Eesley household visible from the outside: three of her sons at three different points along the early arc of her motherhood, two years apart at each step (Len 1904, Don 1908, Will 1910), each child captured at the age that all the photographs to follow would not.
