The three eldest Eesley children — Jeanne, Anne, and infant Charlie, c. 1948–1950

The three eldest Will and Peggy Eesley children seated in a row on a patterned rug, c. 1948–1950, before their youngest sister Margaret “Maggie” was born in 1951.

The cast

  • Far left, small toddler in dark velvet jumper and white blouse, white socks and small brown booties: Anne Eesley, age about 2 (born 1 March 1946).
  • Center, infant in a high chair in matching dark jumper, mouth open laughing: Charles “Charlie” McMaster Eesley, age about 1 (born 17 February 1947) — Chuck’s father.
  • Far right, slightly older girl seated cross-legged in dark velvet jumper with white blouse and white socks and Mary Janes: Jeanne Eesley, age about 4 or 5 — the eldest, who would marry Joe Kamiab in June 1965.

What this frame records

The three eldest Eesley children together, posed by their parents for what reads as a formal childhood portrait. The dark velvet jumpers all three are dressed in — matching across the older sister, the middle daughter, and even the infant brother — were the dress-up clothes of the late-1940s small-American-town family-portrait studio: dark velvet for formality, white blouses for contrast, white socks and small leather shoes.

This is the earliest archive photograph of Anne. It is also one of the earliest archive photographs of Charlie before the 12th-grade autobiography’s birth account (“I was a mess!” the autobiography opens, talking about the club foot, hernia, and scratched-up face that nearly killed him as an infant). Charlie’s laughing face here, at about a year old, is the recovery from that difficult beginning. The frame predates Maggie’s 1951 birth — the four-child Eesley family had not quite assembled yet.
