English
Zhou Liang, known in the family as Liang Liang 亮亮, is the youngest daughter of Zhou Zhaozheng and Su Ying Xian, born 1976. Her twin elder sisters Zhou Yan and Zhou Wei were born in 1970.
She was born in Yangxin County, where her father had been posted and could not leave. She was fifteen when the transfer back to Qingdao came through in 1991 — of the three sisters, she is the one whose schooling the move most changed. Her parents both went on to work at the Fushansuo Hospital in Shinan District, Qingdao
What she supplied
In September 2026 she answered, by WeChat, several questions this archive had been unable to resolve — the 1991 return, her parents’ receiving hospital, and one thing nobody in the family had recorded:
“My dad did not graduate before the Cultural Revolution. He was in the class of 1966. His grades were excellent and he had already been confirmed for a retained post at Qingdao Medical College, then the Cultural Revolution suddenly broke out, all graduate assignments were suspended, and the retained-post list was voided.”
That single sentence changes the shape of her father’s story: he was not supposed to leave Qingdao at all. He had the job. The Cultural Revolution took it back before he could start it.
The following day she filled in the years between his 1966 graduation and his arrival in Yangxin, which no one in the family had recorded:
- his assignment was held up a full year, and the college back-paid about eight months’ wages; he reached Yangxin in autumn 1967
- his original posting was a township hospital in Ningxia — still a doctor, still on the state cadre establishment — and he swapped with a classmate to get to Shandong instead, which in that chaotic year needed nothing but the two students’ agreement
- he began at the Zhaiwang township hospital, moving to the county traditional-medicine hospital where her mother worked only in 1974, and retired in 2001
- her mother was assigned to the Yangxin county hospital on her own graduation, and that is where her parents met
She has since refined two of her own earlier phrasings, unprompted, and the archive has followed her: the family does not know who received the retained posts once the list was voided — only the Qingdao Medical College archives could answer that — and the Ningxia assignment was a township hospital.
A handful of messages, and a quarter-century of one man’s life goes from a summary to a sequence. The story is at Twenty-four years; the sources and the working-out are on the recording page and her father’s page.
Details withheld — living. She is recorded here under the name the family uses, and with the birth year only, at the sisters’ request.
