Joseph Landai

Joseph Landai was born 13 August 1715. On 2 April 1744 he married Maria Dorothea Wild of Eschach in the small Württemberg town of Ristenau. The couple settled in Röhrach where Joseph worked as a day laborer (Tagelöhner) — the laboring class one notch below the village farmers his daughter would later marry into.

He died 13 October 1787 in Röhrach, age seventy-two — just four months after his wife Maria Dorothea (d. 27 June 1787). The couple-of-the-1780s pattern is the kind of detail Württemberg parish records preserve at length.

Robert Earl’s 1989 “Little History”:

Joseph Landai was the father of Anna Catherina Landai and a fourth great-grandfather. He was born on the 13th of August 1715. On the 2nd of April 1744, in Ristenau, he married Maria Dorothea Wild. Joseph was a day laborer in Röhrach and he died 13 October 1787. Age 72.

His daughter Anna Catherina Landai carries the line forward to the Schmidgall marriage of 1785.
