Nancy Bartlett

Nancy Bartlett married Thomas Bailey on 21 October 1803 in Monongalia County, Virginia. She is Chuck’s maternal 5×-great-grandmother on the Fleming line.

Her daughter Synthia Bailey married Lewis B Fleming in 1827, carrying this line into the Fleming and then the Wildermuth families.

Her family

She was the eldest of the thirteen children listed for Thomas Bartlett and Sarah — a household in the Glades, the upland meadows of what is now Preston County, West Virginia. Her father had come over the Alleghenies from somewhere east shortly after the Revolutionary War; her mother’s surname was already lost by the time the family wrote any of it down.

Her marriage in Monongalia County in October 1803 was the first of two Bartlett–Bailey matches. Three years later, in August 1806, her sister Mary “Polly” Bartlett married Thornsberry Bailey in the Glades — most likely Thomas’s brother, though the record does not say so outright. Nancy and Thomas then named their own eldest son Thornsberry Bailey Jr. (b. August 1804), so the name runs through the family twice over.

Lewis Fleming’s page notes that “the Baileys and Bartletts were old Virginia families,” and the new sheet says where in Virginia: her parents married in Fauquier County, in the Piedmont, about 1783, and went west over the mountains from there. Her paternal grandfather was William Bartlett of Loudoun County (b. 1720), whose seven sons all crossed the mountains together — an attribution the FamilySearch tree disputes.
