Bailey Family Group Record — Robert Earl Wildermuth's research, c. 1990

A single sheet from Robert Earl Wildermuth’s genealogical research — an LDS Family Group Record, form number 0019, printed c. 1990 and submitted from his address in Casselberry, Florida. It is the source document behind the Bailey parentage recorded on Lewis Fleming’s page, and it reaches two generations further back than anything the archive previously held on this line.

What the sheet records

Husband — Thomas Bailey (0136). Born in Virginia; married 21 October 1803 in Monongalia County, Virginia. His father is entered as “I.B.Y. or J.B.Y. Bailey” (0337) — the compiler unsure of the initial — and his mother as Hannah Thornsberry (0338).

Wife — Nancy Bartlett (0137). Father: Thomas Bartlett (0314). Mother: Sarah (0315), recorded with no surname.

Children, in the order listed:

1. Thornsberry Bailey Jr. (0310) — b. August 1804, Harrison County, Virginia; d. 25 May 1857, Preston County. Spouse: Bathsheba (“Basha”) Pell.
2. Sarah Bailey (0311) — spouse: William Vannort.
3. Elizabeth Bailey (0312) — b. Taylor County, Virginia; spouse: Dempsey Welch.
4. Synthia Bailey (0089) — married 14 March 1827 in Harrison County, Virginia. Spouse: Lewis B Fleming (0090).
5. James Bailey (0313) — b. Taylor County, Virginia.

Why it matters

The fourth child is the join. Synthia Bailey married Lewis B Fleming — the Arnold’s Creek settler Robert Earl called “almost an enigma to me.” That marriage carries the Bailey and Bartlett families into the Fleming line, and from there into the Wildermuths: Synthia’s eldest son Thomas Bailey Fleming (b. 1830) → James Wesley Fleming (1855) → Sadye Fleming Wildermuth.

The sheet also shows a naming habit running through the family: Hannah Thornsberry’s surname becomes her grandson’s given name (Thornsberry Bailey Jr.), and one generation on, Thomas Bailey’s surname becomes his grandson’s middle name (Thomas Bailey Fleming). Twice, a woman’s family name survives as a man’s.

Everything on the form matches what the archive already carried from the Wildermuth/Bain book — the 14 March 1827 marriage, the parents’ names — which is the useful thing: this is the document those facts came from, in Robert Earl’s own research file.

What is still open

The initials of J.B.Y. / I.B.Y. Bailey are unresolved on the form itself, and Sarah (Bartlett) has no surname or dates. The LDS ordinance columns on the right of the sheet are blank throughout. No birth or death dates are given for Thomas Bailey or Nancy Bartlett.
