Thomas Bailey Fleming

Thomas Bailey Fleming is the Fleming generation that closes the line between the Arnold’s Creek settler Lewis Fleming and Sadye’s father. Dale Eesley’s FamilySearch tree makes the descent explicit: Thomas is the son of Lewis B Fleming and Cynthia (Bailey) Fleming, and the father of James Wesley Fleming — so what had been the archive’s working guess is now documented.

He was born February 1830 at Arnold’s Creek, in the Doddridge County hill country his father had settled, and on 28 August 1851 married Martha Turner. His father Lewis sold him fifty acres at Burnt Cabin Slope before moving east to Taylor County — the land Thomas farmed and raised his family on.

That family was large — the GEDCOM records thirteen children, the eldest being James Wesley Fleming (b. 20 December 1855), Chuck’s maternal great-great-grandfather. Among the younger sons the Civil War is written into the names themselves: Ulysses Grant Fleming and George McClellan Fleming, both born in 1864 and named for Union generals — the same Union sympathy that had sent Thomas’s uncle John into the Union Army while another Fleming son wore Confederate gray. The West Virginia Flemings were, on this branch, a Union family.

He is Chuck’s maternal 3×-great-grandfather — Thomas Bailey → James Wesley Fleming → Sadye → Robert Earl → Terrie → Chuck.
