Will, Peggy, Charlie, and Terrie at the Highland Ridge stone fireplace — c. 1978-1982

The four of them — standing together against the Highland Ridge stone fireplace wall, the architectural centerpiece Will Eesley had designed for the house he built in Lowell, Ohio. Chuck’s paternal grandparents and his parents in a single frame, four months or four years away from his own birth.

The cast, left to right

• Wilbur “Will” Eesley — Chuck’s paternal grandfather, the architect, in a white short-sleeve shirt with a striped tie hung loose at his open collar, plaid trousers, holding eyeglasses in his right hand. His characteristic small mid-century-modern eyeglasses hang from a temple. Late sixties to early seventies.
• Margaret “Peggy” McMaster Eesley — Chuck’s paternal grandmother, in a red-and-white floral print blouse and dark trousers, hair styled up gray. Mid-to-late sixties.
• Terrie Lee (Wildermuth) Eesley — Chuck’s mother, blonde feathered hair, in a navy short-sleeve polo and tan or khaki trousers. Early-to-mid thirties.
• Charles “Charlie” Eesley — Chuck’s father, in a pale-blue short-sleeve shirt and dark trousers, characteristic red-orange mustache and beard, dark belt, wristwatch. Early thirties.

The fireplace and what it carries

The stone fireplace wall behind them is the Highland Ridge house’s defining interior feature — Will’s architect’s eye for natural stone, brought to the family room of the home he designed. A small wooden ledge supports a basket-and-broom folk-art arrangement at the right; a small carved figure (possibly Asian-inspired, fitting the Eesleys’ Japan-and-Hong-Kong travel architectural taste) sits at the lower left.

Dating — the late seventies to early eighties

The frame reads as late 1970s to early 1980s by clothing and hair: Will’s plaid trousers, Charlie’s bushy mustache and broad-collar polo, Terrie’s blonde feathered cut, Peggy’s printed blouse. Charlie was born 25 March 1948; Terrie was born 23 May 1946. They appear here as a couple in their early-to-mid thirties — possibly before Chuck’s December 1979 birth, possibly in the first few years after. The c. 1978-1982 window is the broadest defensible dating; the specific occasion is open research.

What the photograph carries that the c. 1985-1986 extended family gathering does not: the four of them alone, as the core line. Two generations of Eesley/Wildermuth marriage, framed against the stone wall Will built. The architectural ambition of Highland Ridge and the marriage that made Chuck arrive within a few years of this picture — together in one frame.
