The Qingdao Families — Zhou, Li, and Shang

An overview of Lijie Zhou's side of the family — the three Shandong families this archive documents (the paternal Zhou line and the maternal Li and Shang lines), the geography that anchors them (Jiaozhou, Qingdao, and Pingdu), the generation-name characters that mark each sibling set, and the double Li–Shang marriage in which two Li siblings married two Shang siblings in a single generation. Grounded in the family tree Chuck and Dale maintain and in the Han characters Lijie's mother confirmed in June 2026, with a note on what is confirmed versus still pending. The shape of Lijie’s side

The Eesley and Wildermuth sides of this archive reach back through Ontario, Ohio, and the Württemberg villages. Lijie’s side reaches back through one Chinese province — Shandong — and, within it, three neighboring places on the Yellow Sea: the coastal city of Qingdao, the older county-city of Jiaozhou just inland, and Pingdu to the north. Three families are documented here, and they sort cleanly into one paternal line and two maternal lines that later became one knot.

  • The Zhou (周) family is Lijie’s paternal line — her father Ling Zhou’s family, rooted in Jiaozhou.
  • The Li (李) and Shang (尚) families are her maternal lines — her mother Xun Li’s parents’ families, both in Qingdao — and they intermarried twice in a single generation.

What follows is the skeleton of each, using only what the family tree records and the characters Lijie’s mother confirmed in June 2026.

The Zhou line (paternal) — out of Jiaozhou

The deepest Zhou-side ancestors documented so far are Zhou Huiting 周慧亭 and his wife, surnamed Leng 冷 — one of the rarer Chinese surnames. Their son Zhou Maoli 周茂礼 is the branch’s geographic root: he died in Jiaozhou in 1935, twelve years before the founding of the People’s Republic and in the same city-region where his children were born. His wife Pang Huancai 庞焕彩 was born in Jiaozhou in 1908 and died in Qingdao in 1992 — outliving Maoli by fifty-seven years and holding the family together across nearly the whole span of the century.

Their three children — Zhaoxiang 周兆祥 (1930–2022), Zhaozheng 周兆帧 (b. 1938), and Xiuzhen 周秀珍 — were all born in the Jiaozhou region and share the generation character 兆 (Zhao) in their given names, the mark of a single sibling set in a Chinese generational naming scheme. The eldest, Zhaoxiang, is Lijie’s grandfather; his son Ling Zhou is Lijie’s father. The Li line (maternal) — in Qingdao

Li Fengting 李丰庭 and his wife Qiu Rongjing 邱蓉镜 are Lijie’s maternal great-grandparents. The tree records Fengting as dying in Qingdao; Rongjing was born in Pingdu — the county-city north of Qingdao — and died about 1974 in Qingdao. Their four children were Zhongchu 李仲初 (1921–1982), Yunhua 李蕴华 (b. 1911), Chengwu 李城武, and Yunying 李蕴英; the two daughters share the character 蕴 (Yun). Zhongchu — Lijie’s grandfather — married into the Shang family, and his daughter Xun Li 李恂 (b. 1956) is Lijie’s mother.

The Shang line (maternal) — in Qingdao

Shang DeChen 尚德臣 and his wife Tan Chune 谭春娥 had four children who all carry the generation character 耀 (Yao), in birth order so far as recorded: Yaoxiang 尚耀香 (1911–1993, b. Pingdu), Yaozhen 尚耀真 (1921–2013), Yaofu 尚耀福 (1925–2014), and Yaoli 尚耀礼 (year unrecorded). Yaozhen is Lijie’s grandmother — and the one grandparent on Lijie’s side who lived long enough to watch Lijie grow into adulthood. She had studied at a mission school: literate and without bound feet, an educated and open-minded woman at a time when most homemakers her age were neither. Her daughter Xun Li’s remembrance of her, written in July 2026, is the fullest personal portrait in this branch of the archive.

The knot: the Li–Shang double marriage

The two maternal families did not simply stand side by side — they were joined twice in the same generation. Lijie’s grandfather Zhongchu Li married Yaozhen Shang; and Zhongchu’s sister Yunhua Li married Yaozhen’s brother Yaofu Shang. Two Li siblings married two Shang siblings. So the couple at the head of Lijie’s maternal line (Zhongchu + Yaozhen) and the great-aunt-and-uncle beside them (Yunhua + Yaofu) are both Li–Shang pairings — the kind of double tie that binds two families into what is, functionally, one extended household. Born in the same city in the same year — Yaozhen on 15 September 1921 and Zhongchu on 2 December 1921, both in the Year of the Rooster — Zhongchu and Yaozhen are the center of that knot.

What is confirmed, and what is still open

The surnames — Zhou, Li, Shang, Qiu, Pang, Tan, Leng — are firm. Many of the given-name characters were confirmed by Lijie’s mother in June 2026; a few are still marked on their pages as provisional, reconstructed from pinyin and from the generation characters (兆, 耀, 蕴), and await family confirmation. Birth and death years are recorded for the anchor figures but are still missing for several of the great-aunts and great-uncles. If the Zhou, Li, or Shang families kept a generation-name poem (字辈) or a written genealogy, recording it would let the deeper generations be reconstructed with confidence rather than inference. Until then, this page states only what the tree and the family have confirmed, and leaves the rest openly marked as pending.

本档案的伊斯利（Eesley）与维尔德穆斯（Wildermuth）两系，可上溯至加拿大安大略、美国俄亥俄，以及德国符腾堡的乡村。周丽婕这一系则扎根于中国的一个省——山东，且集中在黄海之滨相邻的三处：沿海城市**青岛、稍内陆的老城胶州**，以及更北面的平度。本页记录三个家族，恰好归为一条父系与两条母系，而两条母系后来又结成一处。

周氏（父系）——出自胶州

目前所记周氏最深的祖辈是周慧亭及其妻冷氏（“冷”为汉族较稀有的姓氏）。其子周茂礼是这一支的地理之根：1935年卒于胶州，早于新中国成立十二年，亦即其子女出生的同一城域。其妻庞焕彩1908年生于胶州，1992年卒于青岛——比茂礼晚故五十七年，几乎以一人之力撑起这个家历经整个世纪。

三名子女——周兆祥（1930–2022）、周兆帧（1938年生）、周秀珍——均生于胶州一带，名中同带**“兆”字辈**，是中国世系命名中同辈的标记。长子兆祥即周丽婕之祖父；其子周玲为周丽婕之父。（关于兆祥与早年青岛照相馆一事，见家族线索中的更正：照相馆系由其堂兄弟合营，而非其所创办——周氏一侧”创业先驱”这一条目暂且存疑，待家族补全。）

李氏（母系）——在青岛

李丰庭及其妻邱蓉镜是周丽婕的外曾祖父母。家谱记丰庭卒于青岛；蓉镜生于平度（青岛以北的县级市），约1974年卒于青岛。四名子女为李仲初（1921–1982）、李蕴华（1911年生）、李城武、李蕴英；两女同带**“蕴”字**。仲初即周丽婕之外祖父，与尚家结亲，其女李恂（1956年生）为周丽婕之母。

尚氏（母系）——在青岛

尚德臣及其妻谭春娥育有四名子女，名中同带**“耀”字辈**（按已知生年排序）：尚耀香（1911–1993，生于平度）、尚耀真（1921–2013）、尚耀福（1925–2014）、尚耀礼（生年不详）。耀真即周丽婕之外祖母，也是周丽婕这一系中唯一活着见到外孙女长大成人的祖辈。她曾就读于教会学校：识字、未缠足，在那个同龄主妇多不识字、多缠足的年代，是难得的有文化、思想开放的女性。其女李恂于2026年7月写下的追忆，是本支档案中最完整的一篇人物写照。

结：李尚两家的双重通婚

两条母系并非仅仅并立——它们在同一代结成两重姻亲。周丽婕之外祖父李仲初迎娶尚耀真；而仲初之姐李蕴华嫁与耀真之弟尚耀福。李家两位手足分别与尚家两位手足成婚。 于是，周丽婕母系之首的一对（仲初＋耀真）与其旁的姨外祖父母（蕴华＋耀福），皆为李尚配——正是这种双重联结，把两家实际结成一个大家庭。耀真（1921年9月15日生）与仲初（1921年12月2日生）同年同城出生，同属鸡，正是这一结的中心。

作为一条完整的下传世系，本档案现已在两侧各上溯三至四代：

已确认与待补者

姓氏——周、李、尚、邱、庞、谭、冷——均已确定。多数名字汉字已于2026年6月由Lijie之母确认；少数仍在各自页面标注为推测，系据拼音及字辈（兆、耀、蕴）还原，待家族确认。主要人物的生卒年已录，但数位姨外祖辈的生卒仍缺。若周、李、尚三家藏有字辈口诀或成文家谱，记录下来即可让更深的世代由确证而非推断得以重建。在此之前，本页只陈述家谱与家族已确认之事，其余则公开标注为待补。
